Chess and Friendship: How Dylan and Sungbae Connected Over Their Passion

Dylan, a volunteer with Give Chances' Joyful Learning Summer Program, is also a passionate and skilled chess player. Using his talents, he introduced the "Gift of Chess" to Give Chances students. Through the "Gift of Chess," Joyful Learning Summer Students were able to learn about the game, practice strategies, and play against one another.

Sungbae, an artist with Give Chances' DDartists program, had only ever played chess on a computer against digital opponents. He loved the game, but was missing a crucial component of it: human connection. When Dylan learned of this, he wanted to help Sungbae experience the game in a new way. He began teaching Sungbae chess through one-on-one Zoom lessons, guiding him through each move and strategy with patience and enthusiasm.

As time passed, Sungbae, who once saw chess as a solitary, digital pastime, found a deep friendship forming with Dylan. They laughed, strategized, and celebrated each other's victories, forming a bond that went far beyond the game. Through their shared love for chess, Dylan helped Sungbae to improve his skills and experience the game of chess in the fullest. The experience reminded them both of the power of connection, learning, and the joy of discovering new passions together.
