Creative Expressions in Jersey City:
A Colorful Workshop on Traditional Korean Masks

As part of our ongoing Jersey City Arts Education Initiative, Give Chances hosted a hands-on workshop where students explored the art of making 탈 (tal)—traditional Korean masks.
This program aligns with our mission to provide equitable access to culturally enriching arts experiences for all students, especially those from underserved communities. Through this workshop, students not only developed creative skills and self-expression but also connected with Korean heritage and storytelling traditions.

Guided by our teaching artists, each child designed their own mask, experimenting with shapes, textures, and color combinations. The results—joyful, expressive, and proudly unique—speak for themselves, as seen in the photos. This experience helped students build confidence, practice collaboration, and celebrate diversity through the lens of visual art. Most importantly, it empowered them to see themselves as artists and cultural explorers, regardless of background or prior experience.

We are grateful to the Jersey City Arts and Culture Trust Fund for supporting this initiative, and we look forward to continuing to expand arts education opportunities that reflect the richness of our students’ identities and communities.
